NOM board member wants to overthrow the government

One of the main groups spearheading the recent repeal of the state's same-sex marriage law in Maine is the National Organization for Marriage (NOM).

You may recall the group from their hilariously ridiculous "Gathering Storm" ads.

NOM dumped buckets of cash to overturn Maine's same-sex marriage law. An article which ran back on September 4, 2009 reports:

According to state campaign finance reports filed thus far, all but $400 of the more than $343,000 raised by Stand for Marriage has come from the National Organization for Marriage and two other groups. The records show that NOM has donated $160,000 to the campaign, the Portland diocese of the Roman Catholic Church has donated $152,000, and the state chapter of Focus on the Family has donated $31,000.

And that was two months before the election. I'm sure they had spent even more by November. They are not only willing to spend copious amounts of money, but like their "gathering storm" ads, they are willing to peddle irrational fear too.

But not just money and fear....also, revolution.

Science Fiction author and devout Mormon Orson Scott Card is a board member of NOM. He also writes about his beliefs often. Back in 2008, he wrote the following gem about same-sex marriage:

If government is going to meddle in this, it had better be to support marriage in general while providing protection for those caught in truly destructive marriages.

Because when government is the enemy of marriage, then the people who are actually creating successful marriages have no choice but to change governments, by whatever means is made possible or necessary.

Yep. He literally advocated overthrowing the government. That's how much he fears marriage equality.

Lest you feel that possibly that passage was just poorly worded, he makes his feelings even more clear later in the same article:

Regardless of law, marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down, so it can be replaced with a government that will respect and support marriage, and help me raise my children in a society where they will expect to marry in their turn.

Yep. He is like a Mormon Che Guevara.

I read Card's Ender's Game when I was younger. I found it an interesting enough book. Not interesting enough to bother reading the bajillion sequels he has penned but still a fine way to blow a few hours.

After reading his vitriolic and probably treasonous article about same-sex marriage, I searched my book shelves until I found my copy of Ender's Game.

And then I threw it in the trash.

I will never purchase anything by this man again knowing that Card's share of the profits may very well be spent further attacking equality...if not funding the overthrow of the Federal government.

Seriously. Right wingers claim that Liberals are the ones who supposedly hate freedom yet this guy literally wrote a call to arms to overthrow the government if same-sex marriage becomes legal across the nation.

This is how deeply many on the right hate freedom and equality. They are willing to go to war to prevent others from sharing the same freedoms they take for granted.
